Why I became a LawyerColonel Airth
Colonel is a nickname given to me by my maternal grandfather, Judge Hal W. Adams, who was a Judge in North Florida from 1920 to 1960. "Colonel" is a southern colloquialism for "attorney".
For the first few months of my life, I was not called by any name because my parents did not want to call me "Junior" or "Little Bill". One day my grandfather leaned over my crib and said something like "Well, is this the next Colonel in the family?". I remember that story well and it was repeated often as people would ask my parents in my presence how a young boy like me came to be called "Colonel". My grandfather was a tall imposing man and I grew to admire and respect him in many ways. From a very early age, I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer like my grandpa. |
